Precision forging

Forging is the process of melting metals by applying compressive forces like a hammer, power hammer, press or die. Forging is done for products like kitchenware, hand tools, hardware, edged weapons, jewellery and more. Forged parts are also used in machines whenever the part requires high strength.

Forging can produce a part that is stronger than the equivalent cast or machined part. In the forging process as the metal is shaped, its internal grain texture deforms to flow the desired shape. Due to this, the texture is the same throughout the part and it also gets high strength characteristics. It can be achieved at a lower cost. Because of its long-lasting benefits, it outweighs the other processes like casting and fabrication.

The metal is given shape by the tools that touch the workpiece and by control of the applied energy. There are different forging techniques used depending on the design of the products required.

There are different types of forging depending on the temperature at which it is performed like cold forging, hot forging, open-die forging, impressive die forging and precision forging/net shape forging/near-net-shape forging and more.

Precision forging/ Net shape forging/ Near-net-shape forging

This type of forging was developed to reduce the costs and the waste involved in the post-forging processes. Once the forging is done the final product does not need any final machining. As the process uses fewer materials it also produces less scrap. The process requires less energy overall and there is no need for a machine. The only drawback is its cost and it is used when a significant reduction in cost can be achieved.

This type of forging is also popular when the parts have to be forged without heating the slug, bar or billet. This is mainly used to forge Aluminium depending on the final shape. Lubrication of the parts formed is required to increase the life of the die. Aluminium forged parts are mainly used in aerospace, automotive industry and more.

Forging Process

Net shape forging is the clear approach to forming and you can economically produce small parts or large industrial parts. You can achieve accuracy with precision forging techniques. You can also get the advantage of quality products and reduced costs.

Precision forging is more of a refinement process than a shaping process and it is done when the product is near completion. The product is refined to a point no further machining is required before using the product.

The aim of this type of forging is to achieve net shape or near-net-shape parts. The main benefit of this forging is that the grain flow in the shape of the part leads to superior structural strength and superior strength in traverse and short traverse directions.
